GOV.UK's court finder lists two Sheffield buildings for family work[5]. Sheffield Designated Family Court, 48 West Bar, Sheffield S3 8PH, handles arrangements for children after separation, divorce hearings, domestic abuse and adoption[5]. Sheffield Combined Court Centre, The Law Courts, 50 West Bar, Sheffield S3 8PH, handles the same family work and financial remedy as well, alongside civil and criminal cases[5].

When you apply online you start with the children's postcode[11]; a paper C100 goes to the family court for the child's area[12]. The application needs a mediator's MIAM confirmation or a claimed exemption[13]. The C100 form guide walks through it.

Sheffield's family hubs and Relationships Matter

Sheffield City Council runs Family Hubs you can register with, and a Relationships Matter offer that helps couples, together or separated, understand and build healthy relationships; its Parent Hub runs discussion groups, seminars and programmes for parents[14]. The council's Parent Hub says the way separated parents communicate can affect their children, and that help is there if disagreements are becoming a problem[14].

This is parenting support, not mediation, and it does not stand in for a MIAM[13].

04/ If you have been harmed

If there has been domestic abuse

At every MIAM the mediator must assess whether there has been, or is a risk of, domestic abuse[15]. FMC standards cover abuse of all kinds, including coercive, controlling, emotional and financial abuse, and where mediation is assessed as not safe or not suitable, the mediator must not mediate[16].

You may not need a MIAM at all: there is an exemption for domestic abuse, backed by evidence in one of the forms Practice Direction 3A lists[17]. See domestic abuse support and MIAM exemptions.

05/ Living apart

If the other parent lives outside Sheffield

You do not need to meet in the same place: MIAMs are held separately with each person[18], and the other parent can attend on their own, usually with the same mediator[19]. Mediation sessions can be in person or remote, and you do not have to be in the same room or call[20].

For a children application, the online service asks for the children's postcode; if they live at different addresses you use the eldest child's[11]. More on an online MIAM.

06/ Paying for it

Help with the cost

If one of you is eligible for legal aid, both MIAMs and the first joint mediation session are covered[4]. Eligibility is means-tested on income and savings[21], and the register can filter for mediators offering legal-aid-funded mediation[1].

Where the dispute is about children, the voucher scheme contributes up to £500 towards sessions with an FMC-authorised mediator[6][22]; the MIAM is not included[23]. See legal aid mediation.

If you cannot attend in person or online

One exemption applies where you cannot attend online or by video and no authorised mediator has an office within 15 miles of your home; you need to say why[7]. The court checks exemptions and may direct you to a MIAM[24].
